The Case For PA Douglas #WinterZombie

by Jay Wilburn

PA Douglas has interesting stories to tell just from the life he has led even if he never put a word down on paper. He is quite a prolific writer though I think partly because he has a lot to say. His stories are interesting and engaging because he is still having fun writing. I’m not sure it has ever become a job for him and I’m not sure it will ever be anything but a joy for him. That makes it great for his readers too, I’m sure.

PA Douglas has toured as a musician playing 150 plus shows in a year. This added life to many of his stories and characters. It also taught him a lot about marketing and promotion. He launched Bizzaro Pulp Press which continues to thrive even though he has stepped away and moved on since then.

He is inspired by everything around him and draws details from all around the world he observes into his stories. Douglas believes in the saying to write what you know and then fill in the rest. It helps that his personality and interests have led him in so many different directions. He was on tour, so he wrote characters on tour. He was a part time clerk and utilized that in stories. He was a machinist and drew upon that experience. What excites me most as a reader about this pattern is that as of the time I am writing this, Douglas is in his last semester toward becoming an embalmer. His stories are about to get crazy, I think.

Dane Hatchell and PA Douglas came up in the indie writing scene about the same time. They crossed paths a number of times. Hatchell proofed work for Douglas and Douglas did some covers for Hatchell. They were finally drawn together on some projects by a mutual press and have been creating great work together since then including The Dark Times and The End.

Douglas is addicted to productivity. If he starts it, he is driven to see it finished. He feels if your hobby isn’t productive, then there isn’t much point in pursuing it. You need to find something else that is actually your passion. That does not mean all hobbies have to produce money, but it is nice when they do. He is driven to write by the same enjoyment he gets from reading a great story. I think that passion really shows in his work. This can be seen in his hobby and side business of creating custom patches.

I hope I have made the case for PA Douglas and his collaborations with Dane Hatchell. Check out The Dark Times and their latest work The End to see what I mean.
