Seize Another Day #SummerZombie

by Baileigh Higgins

In today’s blog post, I’d like to talk about the characters in my latest Zombie Apocalypse book, Seize Another Day, and how at times, it can be hard being a writer while working on such an involved story.

Why do you ask?

Because by this point in the series, I’ve gotten to know my characters intimately. So much so, that they’re like real people to me. Friends and family. I know what makes them tick, I know what their pet peeves, likes, and dislikes are. I know how they’d react in any given situation, and I know what means the most to them.

Logan, Nadia, Breytenbach, Max, and Kirstin…how could I ever forget these people? Let go of them? And those are only a few I’ve mentioned. Writing this book with these characters in it has been a real pleasure, a period which I didn’t want to end. Yet, it has, as we’ve now reached the end of the series and the culmination of an epic journey into the heart of humanity’s capacity to survive despite all odds.

Of course, there were lows and highs, wins and losses, triumphs and defeats. As much as I hated to, I had to put my darlings through the wringer. It’s a zombie apocalypse, after all, and not everything can be sunshine and rainbows. Worst of all, there were losses. People I had to say goodbye to. Permanently.

As with any loss, I mourn their passing. I’ll remember all of them, just like I remember those who died earlier in the series. Unforgettable characters, each and everyone, though I won’t spoil it by mentioning them here in case you haven’t read the books

I hope too that those who come after them have it easier, although I can almost guarantee they won’t. Because there, in the midst of all of my tearful goodbyes, is the golden lining to all this. Yes, there will be a spin-off series. And yes, it will feature a few of the old characters.

So, in the end, all is not lost, and we can look forward to many more hours of fun reading about the Dangerous Days characters and their battle to survive in a world far different from our own. A world where one mistake is all it takes. Because survival is just the beginning!
