Spotlight On Jessica Gomez

by Jay Wilburn

*Jay tripped over a stalagmite as he climbed deeper into the cave. He stared a while trying to decide if it was actually a stalactite. He decided it didn’t matter and kept going. The survivors turned guns on him as soon as he appeared, but decided he was alive. They let him go on that way. Jay approached their leader.*

Jay Wilburn: Jessica? Jessica Gomez? Is now a good time?

Jessica Gomez: Sure. Keep your voice down so none of them out there hear us.

Wilburn: What is your latest release?

Gomez: Evolved, Book 3 in my Flash series.

Wilburn: Tell me about it.

Gomez: Ian’s heart shreds when the Infected drag Lillie into the darkness. Her screams echo off the hills, pinging her location, until they’re abruptly silenced. Streaks of blood are the only remnants of her trail, but the snow quickly covers all traces of their escape. Ian will stop at nothing to find her, almost losing his sanity to the brutal winter of the Blue Mountains.

Wilburn: Holy crap. What would you say makes the book different from others I’ve read?

Gomez: I love the traditional Zombie book, but the great thing about this genre is that it allows you to develop your own creative way. I’ve read books from death and destruction, zombie mania to zombies that are almost intelligent. When I wrote the Flash series, INFECTED and IMMUNE, I wanted to bring something to the table that hadn’t been played on a repeating record. When the chemical weapon turned humans INFECTED they died on the spot or it drove them to madness. The IMMUNE lived and breathed just like before the Flash, until years later, when they begin to turn. An event the survivors thought was over. Once a person turns, their body decays, turning into rotting mush. Developing in intelligence as time goes on, the INFECTED become EVOLVED. They begin to relearn human traits and their lost skills. They’re becoming more skilled with each passing day.

Wilburn: How does Evolved fit into the rest of the series?

Gomez: EVOLVED is the 3rd book in the Flash series. The titles of each book are the biggest clue for each book in the series. In the first book, many people died or became INFECTED when the Flash lit the sky, changing the way of life for eternity. Once the dust settles and people begin to pick up the scraps that are left over after the Flash, they begin to figure out that the Infected are not completely gone. People can become Infected, even years after the Flash. It’s a constant worry for the people in the cave. Are they IMMUNE or are they going to change into an INFECTED at any given moment? In EVOLVED, the latest book in the series, the Infected are Evolving, and relearning lost human traits. Proving that they’re not the mindless creature that people think they’ve become. That they may outsmart even the living.

Wilburn: What do you hope readers get out of reading your book and series?

Gomez: A creative imagination. There are many variations of Zombie books. I hope this opens their minds to a new path. My series is more than death and chaos. (of course, that parts in there too!) They show that family means something, even after mankind is mostly gone. It’s a paranormal, apocalyptic, suspense, romance, will keep you ducking behind the covers.

Wilburn: Sounds good. Everyone, pick up Evolved now or begin with book one in the Flash series.

Gomez: Who are you talking to?

*Jay looked back to see none of the other survivors were in this section of the caves any longer.*

Wilburn: Um, I thought that maybe … um, nevermind …

*Jay left the way he came in as he mumbled in hyperlinks*

Wilburn:
