The Case for Baileigh Higgins #SummerZombie

by Jay Wilburn

Baileigh Higgins is a magnificent apocalyptic author out of South Africa with three amazing and different series available with Dangerous Days, The Black Tide series, and Death’s Children. All three of these stand alone and speak for themselves. All three series are worth reading. Her latest addition to the Dangerous Days series is Seize Another Day and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Asking her about her influences and the work out there that she enjoys, Higgins told me, with regards to the zombie genre, she thinks we have a plethora of fresh new works on our hands. Think the Train to Busan, Cargo, The Girl with All the Gifts, iZombie, and so many more. Every day, she sees new interpretations cropping up, both in film, on TV, and in books. It excites her, because she knows the genre has plenty more to offer. All we need is to stretch our imaginations.

I asked her about her journey from her first book to where she stands now. It’s been a roller coaster ride for sure, she said, with lots of incredible highs and plenty of devastating lows. She never thought she’d end up where she is today, and if she’d known then what she knows now, she says she could have saved herself some pain and suffering, but couldn’t we all? But she wouldn’t exchange the journey for anything in the world.

The Death’s Children Series started out as a side line project. She wanted to explore the impact of the zombie apocalypse on kids and teens, so she wrote a series of novelettes centering on different characters. It’s set in the same world as the Dangerous Days Series and some of the characters are linked. Most notably, in Seize Another Day, the two groups join up. I love both series separately and I’m excited to see them come together now.

In comparing the Dangerous Days series with The Black Tide series, there are notable differences between the two series. The Black Tide, for instance, deals with a different kind of apocalypse, meaning no zombies. It also focuses on one character instead of many, and is written in the first person instead of third. However, what remains central to both series, is humanity’s ability to overcome terrible conditions, as well as the bonds of family and friendship.

Looking ahead at the future of her writing and releases, now that the Dangerous Days and Death’s Children are essentially finished, she wants to write a sideline trilogy featuring three characters from those two series. This will bond the two worlds even more and will offer fans a new adventure. She is currently working on two other projects: A zombie apocalypse with a difference (think interspecies) and a new apocalyptic adventuring featuring hybrid creatures. I’m looking forward to everything she puts out for readers.

I hope I have made the case for Baileigh Higgins. Check out The Dangerous Days series and the other work linked above.
