Who Lives and Who Dies

by Samie Sands

Realistically, not many people will live through the zombie apocalypse, it just isn’t possible for everyone to get by when something so horrific happens to the world. Survival of the fittest will really come into play. As many post-apocalyptic books and movies show, it’s a situation that can bring the best and worst out in humanity, depending on how people take to it.

There are certain skills that will undoubtedly help people to get by. The ability to fight, to medically take care of themselves, to endure the boredom, the fear, the day-to-day hell. I always consider this when writing my characters, but often, they don’t have these skills or personality traits at all. There are plenty of books out there with characters who have the right physical and mental strength, I wanted to think about everybody else and give them a voice. Yes, the characters might not always be perfect or make the smartest decisions, but I believe that’s more real.

I won’t spoil Not Dead Yet by telling you who lives and who dies, but here are some of the personalities that you’ll find in the book:

  1. Amy Rowles – Amy is institutionalized at the beginning of her story after her personal life spiraled into a breakdown. She’s determined to break out because she doesn’t think she deserves to be there, but only because she doesn’t know what’s going on outside those walls…
  2. Luke Yates – Luke is lonely is the expansive Australian wasteland that he finds himself in once the undead begin to rule. That is until he finds young, pregnant Jemma.
  3. Katie and Felicia – these women are stuck in a camp in Amsterdam with primitive communication devices to get by. One of the suspects that the camp is corrupt and the other isn’t so sure. Both of them try to convince each other that they’re right while things potentially grow more dangerous around them.
  4. Diana Elizabeth Davis-Rumbold – A Pagan Celtic witch who’s running a sanctuary…the only thing she needs is other people.
  5. Dave Suscheck – bad things have happened to Dave and he’s become a bad person because of it. The world that he’s created around himself is sick and twisted beyond belief.
