Zombies: Should We Love Them or Hate Them? #SummerZombie

by Alathia Paris Morgan

Zombies, should we love them or hate them? Is this just a fad that will disappear when the zombie shows are done? Why are we so fascinated by the undead?

One of the grossest and most disgusting things, make us watch, read and follow them avidly, but if we were to meet them in real life we would run the other direction. What is wrong with us?

I believe it’s the possibilities that come from a chaotic world. We put ourselves in the place of the main characters and imagine how we would handle situations with the undead. We feel for those that don’t have the skills or ability to survive, but we are certain that we would never do the same stupid things that would get us killed. It’s the thrill of the unknown world that would be so different from what we’ve ever experienced. It seems that we love zombies and can’t get enough of them, so I don’t think we hate them. Why do they make us so excited that we can’t wait to tune in and see who will die this week? Most of are happy to see all of the action on the screen, but faced with rotting and decaying corpses following us around like pets, I think we would all be singing a different story. Our love would die quickly when reality and the smell set in, hate and zombies would be the code word of the day.

I hated zombies until just a couple of years ago and I still write most zombie scenes with one hand over my eyes to block out the gore. I don’t like horror or things that are really intense and where it’s uncertain if the people in the show are going to die. (Books are a totally different story for some reason.)  The story of my now favorite show drew me in and I needed to know more about the people. Where did they come from and would they survive? These questions made me continue to tune in and now as a writer, I hope to explore all of these thoughts in regards to the end of days world that involve zombies.
