Spotlight On Adrienne Lecter

*Jay Wilburn checks his watch again as he sits on the side of the road in the shade of a collapsing billboard for Erectile Dysfunction drugs. Dust rises high from behind the hills in the distance. It could be wind. Might be zombies. Might be vehicles from any of a number of potentially hostile groups. The buzz of a motorcycle grows from the west. He is scared, but he waits. Adrienne Lecter pulls to a stop in front of him, but stays on the bike.*

Adrienne Lecter: You’re still here, I see.

Jay Wilburn: I told you I would be here. I still need the interview.

Lecter: It needs to be quick. People are moving in on each other in growing armies and the dead are close behind.

Wilburn: Okay. State your name and your latest work.

Lecter: Adriene Lecter and my latest was Affliction (Green Fields #7).

Wilburn: Describe it to me.

Lecter: A year and a half after the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse, everyone is getting ready for another, long hard winter, to rest, well-deserved, after not only fighting the undead, but also establishing a new balance of power in the country. Yet in a world where a cough is never just a cough, a different battle for survival may well be up ahead.

My zombies were created by a virus, but there’s a conspiracy behind all this! Gasp! They are fast, and a bunch of them are faster and stronger than the average human so simply walking away from them will make you dinner in under five seconds flat.

The protagonist is female and a scientist who doesn’t know a thing about survival in the beginning. There’s also more focus on the science and reasons behind the outbreak than a lot of other books get away with. Also comes with a dash of humor and some animated conversations, if that’s your thing!

Wilburn: How does it fit into the rest of the series?

Lecter: It’s the 7th book of the series, and they all build on the one that came before, but books #4 and #7 are entry points if someone wouldn’t want to read over half a million words before. You might miss out on a lot of background information if you start with this one, so better head over to #1.

The 6th book had more of an ending than most in-series books do, and #7 takes off in a very different direction from what came before. The main plot arc that started in the first book is over, and now it’s more about dealing with the consequences and fallout of what happened before, while starting on a great new adventure. Also, I take my titles way too seriously, and this one comes with a nasty little twist.

Wilburn: What do you like or dislike about zombie stories you have read or seen? How does that shape what you create?

Lecter: I love the survival aspect of the stories, and to see how normally decent people deal with shitty situations they suddenly find themselves in. I’m not really a fan of John Awesome, Navy SEAL and all-around badass having to fight for his life. He has all the tools, and he knows what’s coming for him. I’d rather read about Mary Average, who’s biggest fear until the outbreak was that her manicure was chipping. Let’s see how she deals with suddenly being on the menu! That’s why I chose Bree for my protagonist rather than Nate, who is likely the number one reason why she is still alive. Let the underdog become top dog while you watch the world burn.

*Zombies top the hills and lumber toward them with dust rising high behind.*

Wilburn: Looks like it was zombies after all.

Lecter: You better find better shelter than that limp billboard.

*She drives away to the east. Wilburn looks up at the giant purple pills above his head. He looks out at the zombies in the distance. Wilburn decides to stay in the shade a little while longer.*
