Yes, we know they are dead, but the genre as a whole continues to thrive. What started for many with the “of the dead” series by George Romero and more modernly brought into the spotlight by Robert Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead” is now a robust and dynamic genre filled with a variety of zombie tales.

Many great writers have expanded upon and pushed the traditional zombie apocalypse story to new levels in the last decade. These stories are dark and rich and meet the hunger of the readers, offering them what they love and giving them even more to devour. In addition, many authors and creatives are coming to the table with whole new takes on the genre and how zombies can be used in different ways. Just take a look at shows like iZombie, Santa Clarita Diet & Z Nation as a few easy examples.

In the recently released Undead Worlds Anthology, a collection of 22 stories by 22 different authors we see everything from a zombie themed survival game show, to super-hero zombies, to evil zombie experiments and other fun glimpses at how authors are giving new life to the dead. I think that is one of the most interesting things about the current growth within the genre, that we are seeing authors create fresh and new ideas from what could easily become a stale topic.

One of the other cool things about the genre today is how creatives have taken the concept and applied it to different pop culture properties, such as the comic series “Marvel Zombies” or artists interpretation of everything from Disney Princess Zombies to Star Wars Zombies. I also think it is really cool at events when people do cosplay as zombies. At a recent Zombie Con in Spokane, WA I saw lots of cool zombie costumes, but one of the best was a group of “Troll Doll” zombies that took me by complete surprise.

Seeing all those bright costumes covered in blood and gore made me wonder what could possibly be next for zombies? I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see!
